Det legendariske Forum Romanum, det antikke hjerte af Rom, var i sine velmagtsdage et blomstrende midtpunkt for social, politisk og religiøs aktivitet. Byen var vært for alting fra politiske valg til kriminelle høringer og gladiatorkampe, og den er nu et vidtstrakt kompleks af ruiner, der bare venter på en spadseretur til fortiden.
Landet under Rom var oprindeligt marskland, der var blevet drænet takket været en imponerende ingeniørmæssig præstation, men efter Romerrigets fald blev området igen uanvendt.
